Healthy Zone School Excellence Award: Christie Elementary

Since 2011, the Healthy Zone School Program has helped schools create a culture of health and wellness. This partnership between The Cooper Institute and United Way of Metropolitan Dallas gives teachers, students, parents and the community the resources and education tools needed to live healthier, more active lives. Currently, the program has 181 schools with over 145,000 local students in Dallas, Collin, Rockwall and southern Denton counties.

Each year, we recognize one school that goes above and beyond their commitment to building healthy habits. We are proud to award Christie Elementary in Plano ISD with the 2019 Healthy Zone School Excellence Award.

Led by PE teacher Angela O’Brian and 2nd grade teacher Jenni Lagos, Christie Elementary demonstrates high-quality health practices that engage students, staff, and the greater community. Since joining the Healthy Zone School Program in 2017, this school has continued to create a culture of health through a wide-variety of activities, including:

  • 21-Day Challenge
  • Morning fitness clubs
  • Classroom brain breaks
  • Harvest of the Month
  • Teacher FitZone Challenges

In addition, this school works with local organizations to bring new resources to their campus such as participating in the Dallas Stars Fitness Stars Program. They also worked with PepsiCo to transform the school blacktop into an interactive play space.

The Healthy Zone School Program was honored to recognize and celebrate Christie Elementary’s achievement at the 2019 End of Year Celebration at Dave & Buster’s in Dallas. Congratulations on this accomplishment and thank you for your dedication to raising a healthier generation.
